Playful Plastic? Sina Basila Hickey March 6 - 12, 2022
Artist Statement: Our world is a playroom of plastics, a dollhouse fantasy where the effects of plastic products are narrowed to the superficiality of consumption. In this playroom, we find joy in the colorful, trouble-free, and new, only by ignoring the big picture. Our limited vision allows us to consume plastics for their low cost, lightness, and convenience, oblivious to the disruptions of Black, Indigenous, and Brown communities in which these plastics are mostly produced, the greenhouse gas emissions, and the accumulation of waste. I ask us to look beyond these walls to reframe our relationship with plastic materials. The transformation of the discarded materials used in this exhibit exemplifies the transformation that needs to take place within us.
