"Another Head (for Saint Denis)" Simeon Youngmann February 6 - 12, 2022
Artist Statement: "Another Head (for St. Denis) explores the iconography of cephalophores––a subgenre of saints depicted holding their severed heads. The head acts as evidence of martyrdom, as a trophy, but it is also a weight that must be carried with them. Cephalophores are icons of hope and survival, empowered by faith, but they are also burdened by it, becoming a complex emblem of both life and death, and the persistent drama of living through death. The elements used in this exhibition range from mundane materials like moss, salt, and clay, to semi-precious metals and saturated colors, pointing to the tension of faith, doubt, hope and fear embodied in the head of St. Denis."
