Artist statement:
The world is my studio.
I walk. I find. I make. I make meaning.
What if our culture valued the natural world with less focus on mining precious materials from the earth, and more on honoring its beauty and bounty with reverence and respect?
Baubles and beads have been coveted and collected since ancient times. Seeds, feathers, pebbles and shells have long been used to create art and adornment. These small works, embellished as if jewelry, might be worn as such. But here they are tiny sculptures taking on larger-than-life presence and purpose, pointing to the importance of the natural world, our skewed perceptions of nature in modern consumer culture, and the hope that viewers may experience tiny sticks and stones with the wonder that children most naturally do.
About the artist:
Riva Weinstein is a Hudson Valley artist who works with found materials to contemplate and celebrate life. Her practice is grounded in walking and collecting. She has created site specific installations, walking performances and workshops throughout the region for museums, galleries, libraries, outdoor education programs, and community organizations. She has been an artist in residence at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies and holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College.
