“The Race” has taken over the gallery this week, but it’s an odd one! Where is the starting line? Where is the finish?
It feels like an oversized anvil could drop into this gold-leafed chaos at any moment- the cartoonish figures Mindy McDaniel has created have the self assuredness of Bugs Bunny. We can’t help but imagine these come to life and bumbling and each head tugging to keep going its way.
The flags have meanings in motor racing - black and white is a finish, yellow is a caution, and more - but they don’t fit into a singular or logical narrative without conflicting with each other. Shiny, dark, elephant-like creatures hold the flags; they have wings for ears and the center seems to be an upside down seal’s head, calling to mind circuses, zoos, and tricks for fish.
