"Wave and Impact"

Artist Statement:
I love the expression “force of nature”. I think about cycles, evaporation, respiration, erosion, gentle and violent forces at a moment of change, it is all so powerful and vivid. I am interested in the macro, the micro, the biological and the law of conservation of energy (energy can be neither created nor destroyed; rather it transforms from one form to another) It’s fascinating how disconnected humans are from awe and care in relation to the natural world when all of this is whirling around us at all times. I focus on one element (germination, aftershocks, evaporation) and use it like a character that I animate in a series.
I work with brown paper bags as a ground, layering drawing, painting, collage and cutting into the surface forming the body of my character. I use brown paper because it’s tough, has a history of use and absorbs materials and creates a matt surface. I arrange, rearrange, assemble and disassemble the shapes, I love accidents, intuition and surprise in the creation of the work. The pieces are assembled the designed to hang away from the wall to catch shadows. A recent addition has been colored film so I can have colored shadows. I am interested in how much weight these paper pieces can carry and convey, how they push into the room as they push away from the wall and how the shadow moves and responds to viewer.
