"Desnorteando" Agulhas Unidas January 23 - 29, 2022
Artists Statement: Agulhas Unidas is a Brazilian collective of textile artists created to discuss and propose social-political action through craft, what they call handmade resistance. The works presented are the result of conversations about the history of craft and women’s roles throughout time within it. It’s also taken into consideration the Latin American history of oppression in contrast to Northern power and influence. Desnorteando presents the work of seven artists from the perspective of their latinidade and its plurality, who explore textiles as a platform to talk about their perspectives and subjectivities. Agulhas Unidas includes artists Tainá Denardi, Adriana Bragotto, Juliana Franco, Patricia Bochner, Jessica Costa, Juliana Maia, and Ana Maria Farina. Farina also has roots in the Hudson Valley and organized the collaboration with Smallbany Gallery.
